What is the Nutrition Sensor?
The Nutrition Sensor belongs to nutrigenetics, the field that studies how genetic variants influence the absorption, conversion and utilization of nutrients. A result describes a predisposition, not a diagnosis – diet, physical activity and living conditions also play a part. Colloquially, such an analysis is also called a DNA nutrition test.
Food pyramid and genes
From the food pyramid to a personal food list
General recommendations such as the food pyramid are aimed at healthy adults in general. However, gene variants can influence how the body absorbs, breaks down or responds to individual nutrients. The Nutrition Sensor shows where this applies and rates foods according to the person’s own genetic profile.*
Highlighted levels: for these groups, the report provides notes from the genetic profile.
- The same for everyone: general recommendation
- Personal: notes from the genetic profile
- Sweets & salty snacksFrom the genetic profile: SaltGene: AGT
- Fats & oilsFrom the genetic profile: Omega-3 and blood lipidsGenes: APOA1, APOB, APOE and others
- Fish, meat, eggsFrom the genetic profile: Iron absorptionGene: HFE
- Milk & dairy productsFrom the genetic profile: Lactose and calciumGene: LCT
- Grains & potatoesFrom the genetic profile: Note on glutenGenes: HLA-DQA1, HLA-DQ8
- Vegetables, fruit & legumesFrom the genetic profile: Folic acid / methylfolateGene: MTHFR
- BeveragesFrom the genetic profile: CaffeineGene: CYP1A2
How the personal food list is created
The food list is included as standard with the Nutrition Sensor. It links the genetic profile with the ingredients of foods and thus turns general recommendations into a personal rating.*

Frequently asked questions about the Nutrition Sensor
The Nutrition Sensor is a non-medical genetic analysis from the ProVitalDNA line by ProGenom. From a saliva sample, our laboratory in Austria evaluates around 50 nutrition-relevant genes and genetic markers. The report explains the results in 16 topics, includes a personal food list and a micronutrient formulation and serves professional partners as a basis for nutritional counseling. The processing time is 1–2 weeks from receipt of the sample.
After a short introduction, the Nutrition Sensor report shows all 16 topic results at a glance. This is followed by the topic chapters, for example on caffeine, omega-3 fatty acids, folic acid, vitamin D3 and iron – each with background, the personal result on a scale, derived recommendations* and study references. The food list with around 1,400 rated foods* and a micronutrient formulation are included as standard. The report is available as a PDF in many languages and, on request, as a high-quality print.
The Nutrition Sensor evaluates around 50 nutrition-relevant genes and genetic markers, including variants associated with caffeine breakdown (CYP1A2), vitamin D3 (VDR), selenium (GPX1), coenzyme Q10 (NQO1) or blood lipids (APOA1). The report explains the results in 16 topics and names the underlying studies in each chapter; further genes feed into the overview of nutrient requirements and into the food list.
From the genetic profile, the report derives for around 40 nutrients and other substances whether more or less of them is favorable, and matches this with the ingredients of each food. Each food thus receives one of six levels – from “Optimal” to “Bad.”* In your consultations, you combine the list with your clients’ preferences, daily routine and state of health.
The food pyramid summarizes recommendations for healthy adults in general and remains a good guide. However, gene variants can influence how the body, for example, breaks down caffeine, absorbs iron from food or responds to omega-3 fatty acids. The Nutrition Sensor therefore adds a personal food list to the general recommendations, rated according to the genetic profile* – as a personal basis for nutritional counseling.
The Nutrition Sensor includes as standard a micronutrient formulation that the report derives from the genetic profile, personal details and a questionnaire.* On request, this becomes NutriMe Complete: personalized micronutrients in daily sachets, produced in Austria and matched to the genetic profile.* NutriMe Complete can also be put together without a genetic analysis, based on a questionnaire or on blood values, for example from the Micronutrient Sensor.
Yes. The Nutrition Sensor report indicates whether attention should be paid to lactose or gluten; it does not provide a diagnosis. If symptoms occur, we recommend clarification by a physician. Gluten should not be omitted on one’s own beforehand, as this can distort the medical examination. Medical genetic analyses are generally ordered and supervised by a physician. The specific requirements differ depending on the country and the type of test.
The Nutrition Sensor describes genetic predispositions in how the body handles nutrients. The relationships analyzed between gene variants and nutrients are supported by scientific studies; the report names the references for each topic and derives specific recommendations on foods and micronutrients from them.*
Private individuals receive the Nutrition Sensor through our professional partners in nutritional counseling, medicine and the fitness and health sector. Interpreting the results
Statements marked with an asterisk are derived recommendations – logical conclusions.
Science: Several million scientific publications have already examined the effects of genes on the human body. That genes can influence, for example, body weight, the effectiveness of certain strategies, the ability to process certain nutrients or characteristics of the skin is supported for each gene analyzed in its respective area by several scientific studies – the genetic characteristics determined by our analyses are therefore based on scientifically established relationships.
Recommendations: The adjustments derived from these findings – to micronutrient dosing, cosmetic formulation and nutrition or lifestyle recommendations – have not yet been confirmed by randomized, placebo-controlled studies for every genetic effect. They should therefore be understood as logical conclusions – not as scientifically proven results – and do not replace medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.
Figures on the numbers of genes and foods reflect the scope of the analysis at the time of writing and may be updated as science advances.
Scientifically established
Logical conclusion*
This is how a derived recommendation comes about: the relationship between gene and nutrient is scientifically described, and the recommendation is derived from it.
